Modulate are an audio visual collective who first came together through a shared interest in electronic music and abstract art.

I first became aware of the collective in 2008 after attending shambala festival. The collective were hosting the woodland area with various installations in the trees from Magnetic Mirror and a multi speaker sound installation by Bobby Bird

Our paths have crossed at various points over the last four years and this year i was invited along to perform at Shambala Festival in the geodesic dome.

I have since been asked to become a member of the collective and join them on some of there audio visual excursions. The Modulate camp took place over the past weekend with various projectors and lasers set up in a woodland enclave with sounds and modualtions courtesy of the collective.

Modulate were previously behind the Oscillate experimental music club. Although mainly based in Birmingham, the Oscillate club also travelled further afield, staging one of their events in a 2,000 capacity disused gas-holder in Amsterdam, where the sounds of the live acts, including HIA, Orbital, and Autechre flew around the giant circular space.

HIA better known as Higher Intelligence Agency was started in 1992 by Bobby Bird around the time of the first Oscillate nights in Birmingham. HIA went on to become one of the originators of a new breed of ambient electronic music and is often cited as one of the first artists to make ambient music with a beat. One of there first releases was part of the seminal Artificial Intelligence  series put out by Warp records between 1992-1994 and featuring the ground breaking Artificial Intelligence compilations .
